NATYA Diploma Course (1.5 years)

You will learn and master the art of performance by delving into the principles and techniques outlined in the ancient encyclopaedic text of Indian performing arts — the Nāṭyaśāstra, authored by Bharata Muni between 200 BCE and 200 CE.

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of both the theoretical and practical dimensions of the Nāṭyaśāstra, with a focused emphasis on Abhinaya — the expressive art of conveying emotions with heightened intensity and nuance to captivate an audience.

You will also develop body fluidity and gain a deep understanding of the application of mudras and body movements as prescribed in the Nāṭyaśāstra — practices often lost or overlooked in today’s mainstream classical dance training.

Please note: This course excludes the practical application of karanas and charis.

Highly recommended for choreographers and those interested in choreography, as it offers a rich foundation for creating meaningful, textually rooted, and emotionally resonant movement vocabulary.

Alongside repertoire learning, you will receive focused training in improvisational techniques such as raga alapana, kalpana swaras, and niraval in selected ragas — equipping you with the skills and confidence to present a complete Carnatic concert.

The course also includes a strong theoretical foundation, covering the fundamentals of swara, tala, and raga, and providing context through short biographies of key composers to deepen your understanding and interpretation of the music.

Ideal for aspiring performers and serious students, this diploma is designed to develop both your technical command and artistic maturity as a vocalist.

Through a progressive, structured approach, the course is designed to build technical precision, expressive depth, and stage confidence, culminating in your ability to present a complete solo Margam performance by the end of the course.

In addition, theoretical components will enhance your understanding of rhythm (tala), movement vocabulary (adavus), expressive technique (abhinaya), and the cultural-historical context of the repertoire, including brief biographies of composers and choreographers.

Ideal for dancers aiming to refine their practice or prepare for solo performance, this diploma supports both artistic growth and professional readiness.

The program also includes training in signature Kuchipudi elements such as dance on the brass plate (Tarangam) and dialogue delivery, preserving the unique theatrical tradition of the style. Each item is taught with attention to detail, enabling you to confidently perform a complete Kuchipudi recital by the end of the course.
